​​Situated in the Province of Enna, Lake Pergusa covers an area of 1.83 square kilometres. The lake is 12 metres deep at its deepest point and is bizarrely surrounded by a motor racing circuit.

Lake Pergusa has ancient origins, and it is believed to be the result of a natural depression formed during the Pleistocene era. The lake is mentioned in Greek mythology, associated with the abduction of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, by Hades, the god of the underworld.
