Among the most famous natural landmarks of Sicily are household names such as fiery Mount Etna, along with a variety of other locations where nature has created something special.
The Scala dei Turchi, or "Turkish Staircase" is situated a short distance west of Agrigento. At a certain point, the white rock creeps up from the sea in layers, giving it an almost man-made appearance, ideal for medieval Turkish pirates to make land on. One of the jewels of Sicily is Isola Bella beach at the foot of Taormina where its surrounded by the brightest blue water. |
The windmills of Stagnone Salt Pans close to Trapani offer a surprising element to the Sicilian landscape, while the unusual rock formations in the Alcantara Gorge make it a fascinating spectacle to behold whilst exploring the narrow ravine.
