Major  Cities  and  Towns  of  Abruzzo

The ​major cities and towns of ​Abruzzo consist of the most populous towns which include the capital cities of the four provinces of Abruzzo.

The capital of Abruzzo is L'Aquila, located just south of the Gran Sasso & Monti della Laga National Park in one of the most mountainous areas of the region.

The city of L'Aquila is still recovering from the devastating 2009 earthquake but acts as a great base from which to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding area and its ski resorts. 
The largest population in Abruzzo belongs to Pescara, in fact it has four times more inhabitants than L'Aquila and six times more than any of the other cities in this list. Pescara lies on the Adriatic Coast, has a long sandy beach and acts as an important travel hub with the region's only international airport just outside the city. 

​Chieti stands just a short distance inland from Pescara, making it convenient to visit either the coastline or the interior while Teramo, further north, sits just at the edge of the aforementioned Gran Sasso mountain area. 

The next city a short distance up the coast from Pescara is Montesilvano with its own sandy beach while Avezzano, further inland and closer to L'Aquila, is famous for its castle and cathedral. ​
