The four provinces of Abruzzo are each divided up into a number of comunes which are typically towns and villages. The provinces are instead named after the larger towns and cities, a system that applies in 18 of the 20 regions of Italy including Abruzzo.
L'Aquila Province is named after the capital of Abruzzo and it covers the largest territory with 5,048 km². It also has the greatest number of comunes with 108. Chieti Province has the largest population in Abruzzo with 383,000 inhabitants but each of the other three have similar numbers, around the 300,000 mark. The final two provinces are named after Pescara and Teramo. |
