There are currently six Orange Flag towns of Abruzzo with the quirky Roccascalegna and quaint Opi occupying the top of the list.
The Orange Flag (Bandiera Arancione in Italian) is an award given to towns with a population of fewer than 15,000, that meet certain other criteria around tourist facilities, information and aesthetic beauty. The scheme is governed by the Touring Club Italiano. Few of the fellow orange flag towns in Italy can match the aesthetic strangeness of Roccascalegna that seems to defy gravity from certain angles while Opi is another attractive hill town. |
The remaining four towns on the list offer their own unique charms: Civitella Alfedena lies in one of the most attractive areas of the region, the sprawling Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. To the east of Civitella in another bucolic area of Abruzzo we find a clutch of attractive towns all within close proximity of each other: Lama dei Peligni, Palena and Fara San Martino.
