The town of Civitella Alfedena is situated within the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo had a population of 285 inhabitants on 1 January 2022. It stands at an elevation of 1,123 metres above sea level and covers a total area of 29 square kilometres.

Civitella Alfedena is situated half a kilometre from Lake Barrea which is one of the most popular areas of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The park is famous for its wildlife which includes bears and wolves with the latter particularly well represented among the town's visitor attractions.
The Area Faunistica del Lupo is a segregated walking area from which it's possible to see the wolves up close, albeit from the safety of being behind a fence. Also within the town is a museum dedicated to the Apennine Wolf: the Museo del Lupo Appenninico.
