The five provinces of Campania take the name of the most prominent city in each area of the region. The capital city of Campania is Naples which belongs to the Metropolitan City of Naples province. Campania is one of the 20 regions of Italy and within most of those regions there are a number of provinces.
Whereas the Metropolitan City of Naples is the most populous in the region, it is the Salerno Province that covers the largest territory with 4,923 km². The remaining three provinces are named after the cities of Benevento, Avellino and Caserta. Within each province there are numerous comunes which are towns or villages. |
