The eight provinces of Piedmont represent the various districts of the north-west Italian region. There are 20 regions of Italy and within all but one region, there are then a series of provinces which are typically named after the main city or town of a particular area.
In some regions, of which Piedmont is one, the larger cities have become reclassified as Metropolitan Cities. Therefore, as of 2015, the once Turin Province was renamed as the Metropolitan City of Turin. The new naming convention can cause some confusion between a reference to the province and the city. Cuneo Province covers the largest geographical area in Piedmont with 6,902 km². |
Five more of the provinces of Piedmont are named after the cities of Alessandria, Asti, Biella, Novara and Vercelli, while the sixth is called Verbano Cusio Ossola - the three parts of the name relating to the city of Verbania, Cusio which is the old name of Lake Orta and the Ossola valley.
