Profile
The Sybaris archaeological site is an ancient Greek city located in Calabria, Italy. It is situated near the modern town of Sibari, in the province of Cosenza. The site holds great historical significance as one of the most important and influential cities of Magna Graecia, the Greek colonies in Southern Italy.
History
Sybaris was founded in the 8th century BC by Greek settlers from Achaea. It quickly became a prosperous and affluent city known for its wealth, luxury, and decadence. According to ancient accounts, the inhabitants of Sybaris were famous for their luxurious lifestyle and love of pleasure.
The term "Sybarite" originated from this city, referring to a person who indulges in pleasure and luxury. The city was strategically located near fertile lands, enabling it to become an economic powerhouse through agriculture, trade, and artisanal activities. However, its prosperity led to conflicts with neighboring Greek cities, particularly Croton. In 510 BC, the Crotonians sacked and destroyed Sybaris, bringing an end to its golden age.
