The city of Catanzaro is the capital city of the Province of Catanzaro with a population of 89,065 inhabitants.
Although not the most populous city in the region (Reggio Calabria has around 180,00), Catanzaro is also the capital of Calabria and has been since 1970. The city sits in an elevated position, 342 metres above sea level and is characterised by a huge bridge: Ponte Morandi which forms part of the city's complex road system. |
Aside from the bridge, the main sight in Catanzaro is the cathedral while there are a series of smaller, Byzantine and Norman churches of interest. One of the busiest areas in the city is Piazza Matteotti which is a 10 minute walk from the cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta), this is also the area where you'll find the majority of shops and places to eat.

Catanzaro's transport system includes local buses while the main train station, called Catanzaro Città, is situated in the city centre, 8 minutes walk from Piazza Matteotti.
Be aware if driving, that Catanzaro is one of the most difficult places to park in Italy; you may have to park a good distance from the centre to find a space, and even then have to perform some tricky manoeuvres to avoid damage to your vehicle. Train or bus is definitely the preferred arrival option here.
