In an area that's famous for a rocky coastline fringed with emerald-coloured seas, the towns of Salento don't quite get the recognition that perhaps they would if they were placed somewhere less spectacular. The boundaries of the Salento are somewhat disputed but it's more or less the heel of Italy's metaphorical boot.
The cultural centre of the Salento is the city of Lecce which is among the most beautiful in Italy with its dazzling baroque architecture and historic monuments. While Lecce lies a small distance inland, the towns of Otranto on the Adriatic Coast and Gallipoli across on the Ionian Coast are the two most famous. |
Castro, Santa Maria di Leuca and Santa Cesarea Terme are just a handful more of the Salento's pretty coastal resorts but there's a great deal to find away from the seaside as well. Galatina for example is home to one of the country's most beautiful basilicas which lies a little off the typical tourist trail; the frescoed interiors of the Basilica di Santa Caterina di Alessandria make that slight detour more than worthy.
Other towns such as Tricase, Nardò and Cavallino offer up their own beautiful religious architecture while Copertino, Avetrana and Andrano are just a sample of those with an medieval castle at their centre.
