Along with those within the fellow Italian regions of Lazio and Campania, the archaeological sites of Sicily are among the most numerous and most impressive. Over the years, Sicily is a land that's been ravaged by wars with one conquering civilisation replacing another throughout its history.

Before the Romans came it was one of the centres of the Magna Graecia civilisation which also included the the four regions of modern day Southern Italy. Translating as "Greater Greece", the civilisation was one of the earliest to leave its stamp on Sicily and we find some extraordinary traces of its history across the island.
