The Castello Aragonese of Le Castella in the southern region of Calabria takes its current name from the erstwhile Spanish empire that restored it in the sixteenth century.
However, the fortress dates back much further, to the 5th century BC when it was constructed as a strategic stronghold by the Greeks during the Magna Graecia period. |

In later years it was said to have been a refuge of Hannibal during the Second Punic War fought between Carthage and Rome. In modern times the castle is the main sight in the small beach resort of Le Castella in the Province of Crotone.
There are several fortresses in Italy that carry the same Castello Aragonese tag; leading examples include the Castello Aragonese on the island of Ischia and the Castello Aragonese of Ortona in the region of Abruzzo.
