The Gulf of Naples is a coastal area in the southern Italian region of Campania. It lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea and measures around 30 kilometres from Bacoli, to the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula.
Also known as the Campanian Archipelago, the wider area of the Gulf includes the three islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri. A much smaller fourth island called Nisida is on the outskirts of Naples. |

A dazzling array of attractions
Within this relatively small area there are a myriad of tourist attractions which makes it one of the favourite holiday destinations in the country. Aside from the three islands, the city of Naples contains some magical historical sights but it doesn't quite get the recognition it deserves with some of those sights hidden at first view.
Scratching the surface of Naples brings great rewards while dipping below the surface opens up a whole new world of catacombs, tunnels and fascinating burial sites.

Archaeological sites
In every direction away from Naples city centre there are some extraordinary archaeological sites which number the likes of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Villa Oplontis which combine to make a UNESCO World Heritage listing. Wherever you are in the Gulf of Naples there's one sight that dominates the landscape: the volcano of Mount Vesuvius whose explosion put paid to Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The Gulf is one of the busiest areas for marine traffic in Italy; the port of Naples is used not only for cargo, but by local ferries and large cruise liners alike. Ferries to the islands run all year round and there are numerous other routes down to the Sorrento Peninsula, the Amalfi Coast and beyond.
