The major cities and towns of Basilicata are typically smaller than those of the other 19 regions of Italy. For example, the capital of Basilicata is Potenza whose population is just above 65,000 which is a similar number to that of the second city: Matera. Potenza and Matera are also both capitals of the two provinces of Basilicata.
Beyond Potenza and Matera, the largest populations can be found in towns rather than cities. The most notable among those are the historic town of Melfi with a population of around 17,000 while similar numbers can be found at the seaside town of Policoro and the hill town of Pisticci which also has a small beach resort. |
