At the top of the list of scenic towns of Basilicata is pretty Maratea which lies close to the regional border of Calabria.
Maratea is a little tricky to define because it consists of several diverse areas that require a fairly significant drive to reach once you leave the main town. With its colourful buildings and welcoming piazza, Maratea's hill town is just the first part of the series which also includes a pretty marina and the incredible Redentore statue which dominates the landscape for miles around from a hill above. |
Offering something quite different from Maratea are the neighbouring towns of Sant'Angelo Le Fratte and Satriano di Lucania which are among the main contenders for the title of Best Mural Town in Italy. The fairly modern phenomenon of covering a town's buildings in art is gradually growing and the effect is quite mesmerising. Basilicata is generally a reserved place where traditions are valued highly so to find two such radical towns in close proximity is something of a surprise.
Other highlights in the region include more traditional fayre such as Miglionico with its impressive architecture, the medieval fortress of Castel Lagopesole and the colourful San Severino Lucano in the Pollino National Park.
