The two provinces of Basilicata are easy to define as they cover opposing areas of the region. There are 20 regions of Italy of which Basilicata is one, and within 18 of those regions there are differing numbers of provinces. In Basilicata, the Potenza Province contains the regional capital and covers the western side of the region including a small section of the Tyrrhenian Coast.
Matera Province covers a slightly smaller area to the south and east of Potenza, including the Ionian Coast between the neighbouring regions of Calabria and Puglia. Potenza Province has the larger number of comunes: 100 to the 31 of Matera Province. |
