So numerous are the scenic towns of Tuscany that to capture even just the very best, they need to be placed in a number of categories.
First up are the famous Hill Towns of Tuscany which are some of the most popular places to visit in the whole country. The likes of Volterra, San Gimignano and Montepulciano are just the tip of a very thick wedge of beautiful medieval hill towns. Offering a very different spectacle are the Seaside Towns of Tuscany which occupy the Tyrrhenian Coast and include Viareggio, Castiglione della Pescaia and Forte dei Marmi among them. |
We then come to two categories whose names might cause a raised eyebrow or two: the Orange Flag Towns of Tuscany have all been awarded the Bandiera Arancione, a mark of excellence determined by Touring Club Italiano, while a similar institution called the Borghi Più Belli d'Italia has its own list of generally smaller towns and villages. That said, a number of the entrants can be found on both lists.
The Historic Towns of Tuscany category is another illustrious list which includes Vinci (home of a certain painter from the Renaissance) and the beautiful town of Pietrasanta among others. Among the Pretty Villages of Tuscany we find another home of a famous Italian: Lajatico where the singer Andrea Bocelli grew up, while other villages on that list include a number of sleepy towns in the Tuscan hills. The final category of Vineyard Towns of Tuscany includes popular wine resorts such as Bolgheri, Carmignano, Greve and Radda in Chianti.
