Of the major cities and towns of Lazio, there's no doubting which is the most important. The city of Rome is the capital of the Lazio region and of course, of Italy itself. Rome is also the capital of the Metropolitan City of Rome province, one of five in the region.
The northernmost provincial capital in Lazio is Viterbo which lies close to the regional border with Tuscany, while directly east of Viterbo, the city of Rieti is considered as the geographical centre of Italy. The two remaining provincial capitals are Frosinone to the south of Rome, and the city of Latina, capital of the Latina Province which borders the region of Campania to the south. |
Three further large residential cities are all within the Metropolitan City of Rome province: Civitavecchia on the Tyrrhenian Coast is the major port in Lazio, while Fiumicino and Ostia occupy opposing banks of the River Tiber to the west of Rome.
