Of the ten provinces of Tuscany the most populous is the Metropolitan City of Florence with just over a million inhabitants.
Tuscany is one of the 20 regions of Italy and within most regions there are a number of provinces which are usually named after the major city or town in a particular area. Within each province there are then a series of comunes which are the towns and in some cases villages. The Metropolitan City of Florence has the largest number of comunes with 44 but the largest territory is covered by Grosseto Province with 4,503 km². Prato Province has the smallest territory (365 km²) and fewest comunes with seven. |
Six of the provinces of Tuscany are named after single cities and include Arezzo, Livorno, Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, and Siena, while the final province is named after two cities: Massa and Carrara.
