The lakeside towns of Lazio don't get the same level of attention as those that mark the fringes of the Great Lakes of northern Italy, but these smaller resorts offer a charm that's all of their own.
Lazio's two largest lakes can both be found to the north-west of Rome; one of those, Lake Bracciano is a favourite summer holiday destination for campers, with dozens of campsites around its lawned edges that lead into the water. The best resort around Lake Bracciano is Trevignano Romano which is also known as something of a centre of culinary expertise, so much so that it tempts large numbers of Romans away from the city at the weekends. |

Across the water from Trevignano Romano is another attractive town called Anguillara Sabazia, whose centro storico overlooking the lake provides some of the most beautiful scenery in the region. The town of Bracciano itself lies just a little inland of the lake but is unmistakable with its imposing Castello Odescalchi standing guard.
With a surface area of 113 km², Lake Bolsena is the largest lake in Lazio and roughly twice the size of Lake Bracciano. The most attractive towns around Lake Bolsena are the town of Bolsena itself with its clutch of medieval buildings, and the smaller resorts of Marta and Capodimonte. Further sumptuous scenery can be found further inland on Lake Turano from which the historic hill town of Castel di Tora rises majestically.
