The town of Latronico is situated within the Province of Potenza in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. Standing at an elevation of 888 metres above sea level, it covers a total area of 76 km² and has a population of 4,342 inhabitants.
A short drive south of here brings you to the Pollino National Park which straddles the border area between Basilicata and Calabria. |
This is a sleepy little town with a charming centro storico (historic centre) where the main sights are the Basilica di Sant'Egidio Abate and a couple of smaller churches such as the Chiesa di San Nicola and the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Transport facilities are limited to bus services which provide the opportunity to reach Potenza, the capital city of Basilicata and the attractive coastal town of Maratea. Of course, having your own vehicle allows greater exploration of the area: heading east you can reach the seaside town of Praia a Mare (Calabria) in just under an hour or heading south, the Pollino National Park in 45 minutes. There are also a number of fascinating hill towns in the vicinity such as Rivello to the north and the towns of Tortora and Aieta which neighbour each other in Calabria.
In spring 2021 it was announced that a number of houses in Latronico would be put up for sale at extremely low prices. In an effort to rebuild the local economy, homes in Latronico have been offered for as little as €10,000.
