The five provinces of Lazio start with the Metropolitan City of Rome which is the largest by every measure. It has the largest population at 4.3 million, covers the greatest territory at 5,352 km² and has the highest number of comunes at 121.
There are 20 regions of Italy of which Lazio is one and within 18 of those regions there are then a series of provinces. The comunes are the smaller towns and in some case villages whereas the provinces are typically named after the major city or town in a particular area. The remaining four provinces of Lazio are named after the cities of Frosinone, Latina, Rieti and Viterbo. |
