The four provinces of Liguria mark the next category of classification after the Liguria region itself which is one of 20 regions of Italy. All but two of the Italian regions are divided up into a varying number of provinces and within each province there are a number of comunes, a term which refers to the towns and villages.
The Metropolitan City of Genoa province which includes the city of Genoa itself, has the highest population with around 840,000 inhabitants and also covers the largest area with 1,838 km². The remaining three provinces are named after the major towns and cities within them: Imperia, La Spezia and Savona. |
