The five provinces of Calabria cover the diverse areas of the region. Calabria is one of the 20 regions of Italy and within 18 of those regions, there are then a certain number of provinces. The provinces are typically named after the major city or town in their respective areas of the region. Then, within each province there are a larger number of comunes which are the towns and villages.
Catanzaro Province is named after the capital city of Calabria but it's the Cosenza Province that covers the largest territory (6,710 km²), has the greatest number of comunes with 105, and also has the largest population with just over 700,000. |
Crotone Province and Vibo Valentia Province are named after their respective towns while the province of the most important city in the south of Calabria takes a different naming convention and is called the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria province.
