The nine provinces of Emilia Romagna represent the different geographical areas of the region. Emilia Romagna is one of the 20 regions of Italy with each region then divided up into a number of provinces. Typically, the name of the province takes that of the largest city within it. However, in 2015 the system was altered slightly with a series of Metropolitan Cities being introduced.
Therefore, the once Bologna Province became the Metropolitan City of Bologna while the remaining eight provinces kept their original names. Each province is split into a series of comuni (Italian plural) which represent the larger towns and villages. |
The Metropolitan City of Bologna is the largest province in Emilia Romagna by all three measures; it has the largest population with just over a million inhabitants, the largest territory with 3,702 km² and the highest number of comuni with 56.
Aside from Bologna, the remaining eight provinces of Emilia Romagna are named after the cities of Ferrara, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia and Rimini. The Forlì Cesena province is the exception as it takes its name from two cities.
