The nine provinces of Sicily are named after the major cities in each distinct area of the island. Sicily is one of the 20 regions of Italy and within 18 of those regions there are a series of provinces.
The provinces are typically named after a city or large town and themselves contain a number of comunes which are the remaining towns and certain villages. The smallest denomination, after the comunes, are the frazioni which each belong to a comune. The Metropolitan City of Palermo is the province of the capital of Sicily and covers the largest territory with 5,009 km². |
The province with the greatest number of comunes in Sicily is the Metropolitan City of Messina with 108, while the Metropolitan City of Catania has the second highest population (1,066,765), slightly smaller than that of the Metropolitan City of Palermo's 1,214,291.
The remaining six provinces are named after the cities of Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Enna, Ragusa, Syracuse and Trapani.
